Ingredients:
- Matcha Powder: 1 tsp (ceremonial or culinary grade, sifted for smoothness)
- Espresso: 1 shot (1 oz / 30 ml, freshly brewed)
- Milk: ¾ cup (6 oz / 180 ml, whole, oat, or almond milk)
- Hot Water: 2 tbsp (30 ml, just below boiling, ~175°F / 80°C)
- Sweetener: 1 tsp honey, maple syrup, or sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
- Vanilla Extract: ¼ tsp (optional, for added depth)
- Ice: 1 cup (for iced version, optional)
Equipment:
- Matcha bowl or small mixing bowl
- Bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) or small whisk/frother
- Espresso machine or stovetop moka pot
- Milk frother or small saucepan
- Mug (for hot latte) or tall glass (for iced latte)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Matcha
- Sift 1 tsp matcha powder into a matcha bowl to remove clumps.
- Add 2 tbsp hot water (not boiling, to preserve matcha’s flavor).
- Whisk vigorously in a “W” motion for 15–30 seconds until frothy and smooth. Set aside.
2. Brew the Espresso
- Pull a single shot of espresso (1 oz / 30 ml) using an espresso machine or moka pot.
- Keep warm if making a hot latte, or let cool slightly for iced.
3. Prepare the Milk
- For Hot Latte: Heat ¾ cup milk in a saucepan over medium heat or with a steam wand until hot but not boiling (140–150°F / 60–65°C). Froth using a frother or whisk for a creamy texture.
- For Iced Latte: Chill ¾ cup milk or use cold milk. Optionally froth for a light foam.
4. Assemble the Latte
- Hot Latte:
- Pour the brewed espresso into a mug.
- Add the frothed matcha mixture.
- Slowly pour in the steamed milk, holding back foam with a spoon if desired, then spoon foam on top.
- Stir gently to combine flavors.
- Iced Latte:
- Fill a tall glass with 1 cup of ice.
- Pour the espresso over the ice, followed by the matcha mixture.
- Top with cold or lightly frothed milk.
- Stir well to blend.
5. Optional Enhancements
- Add 1 tsp sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or sugar) to the matcha or milk for sweetness.
- Stir in ¼ tsp vanilla extract for a smoother flavor profile.
- Dust the top with a pinch of matcha powder or cinnamon for garnish.
Tips:
- Use high-quality matcha for a vibrant color and smooth taste.
- Adjust matcha or espresso quantities to balance flavors to your preference.
- For a stronger matcha flavor, increase matcha to 1.5 tsp.
- Oat milk complements the nutty notes of matcha, while almond milk keeps it light.
Serving:
- Serve immediately for the best flavor and temperature.
- Pair with a light pastry or biscotti for a delightful treat.
