Ingredients

  • 1 shot (1 oz or 30 ml) freshly brewed espresso
  • 4-6 oz (120-180 ml) chilled tonic water (preferably high-quality, like Fever-Tree or Q Tonic)
  • 1/2 tsp simple syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1 thin strip of lemon peel (about 2 inches long)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: 1 thin lemon slice for garnish

Equipment

  • Espresso machine or stovetop moka pot
  • Chilled highball glass or similar
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Vegetable peeler or knife for lemon peel

Instructions

  1. Brew the Espresso: Pull a single shot of espresso (about 1 oz or 30 ml) using an espresso machine or stovetop moka pot. Let it cool slightly for 1-2 minutes to avoid shocking the tonic water.
  2. Prepare the Glass: Fill a chilled highball glass with ice cubes to about two-thirds full.
  3. Add Tonic Water: Pour 4-6 oz of chilled tonic water over the ice, depending on your preferred strength. Leave some room for the espresso.
  4. Incorporate Simple Syrup (Optional): If you prefer a slightly sweeter drink, stir in 1/2 tsp of simple syrup into the tonic water until dissolved.
  5. Pour the Espresso: Gently pour the espresso shot over the tonic water. Pour slowly to create a layered effect or stir gently for a uniform mix.
  6. Add Lemon Twist: Using a vegetable peeler or knife, carefully cut a thin strip of lemon peel. Twist it over the drink to release the oils, then drop it into the glass or drape it over the rim. Optionally, add a thin lemon slice for extra flair.
  7. Serve Immediately: Give the drink a gentle stir to combine flavors, if desired, and serve cold.

Tips

  • Use freshly brewed espresso for the best flavor. Pre-brewed or instant coffee won’t provide the same depth.
  • Adjust the tonic water quantity to balance the bitterness of the espresso to your taste.
  • For a stronger citrus kick, gently squeeze the lemon peel over the drink before adding it.
  • Chill the glass in the refrigerator for 10 minutes beforehand to keep the drink extra cold.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with a straw or stirrer for easy mixing, and enjoy on a sunny afternoon or as a refreshing brunch beverage.
