Ingredients

For the Bagel Dough:

  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the Everything Seasoning:

  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt

For the Hot Dogs:

  • 8 beef or pork hot dogs (or your preferred type)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

For the Boiling Solution:

  • 8 cups water
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stand mixer with dough hook (optional, can knead by hand)
  • Large pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Pastry brush

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
    • In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil.
    • Mix until a dough forms. If using a stand mixer, knead with the dough hook on medium speed for 5-7 minutes. If kneading by hand, knead on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  2. Make the Everything Seasoning:
    • In a small bowl, mix poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and coarse salt. Set aside.
  3. Shape the Bagel Dogs:
    • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
    • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
    • Roll each piece into a rope about 10-12 inches long. Wrap each rope around a hot dog, pinching the ends to seal and leaving the hot dog ends exposed. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Boil the Bagel Dogs:
    • In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda and honey (careful, it will foam).
    • Boil each bagel dog for 30 seconds, turning once, using a slotted spoon. Remove and place back on the baking sheet.
  5. Apply Egg Wash and Seasoning:
    • Whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon water to make an egg wash.
    • Brush each bagel dog with the egg wash, then sprinkle generously with the everything seasoning.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the bagel dough is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Serve:
    • Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with mustard, ketchup, cream cheese, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Tips

  • Make Ahead: Prepare the dough and wrap the hot dogs a day in advance. Refrigerate before boiling and baking.
