Ingredients

For the Sweet & Spicy Relish:

  • 1 cup dill pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 2 tablespoons finely diced jalapeño (seeds removed for less heat)

For the Hot Dogs:

  • 4 high-quality hot dogs (beef, pork, or your preference)
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter for toasting buns

Optional Toppings:

  • Mustard
  • Shredded cheese
  • Crispy fried onions
  • Fresh cilantro

Instructions

Make the Sweet & Spicy Relish:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the dill pickle relish, honey, apple cider vinegar, and sriracha sauce.
  2. Add red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, diced red onion, and jalapeño.
  3. Mix well and let sit for at least 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Can be made up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated.

Prepare the Hot Dogs:

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat, or heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. If grilling: Cook hot dogs for 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally until evenly browned and heated through.
  3. If using skillet: Add a splash of water to the pan, add hot dogs, and cook for 5-7 minutes, turning frequently.

Toast the Buns:

  1. Slice buns lengthwise if not pre-sliced.
  2. Butter the inside of each bun lightly.
  3. Toast on grill or in a dry skillet for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Assembly:

  1. Place each hot dog in a toasted bun.
  2. Generously top with the sweet & spicy relish.
  3. Add any additional toppings as desired.
  4. Serve immediately while hot.

Tips:

  • Taste the relish and adjust sweetness with more honey or heat with additional sriracha
  • The relish gets better as it sits, so making it ahead is recommended
  • For extra flavor, try grilling the hot dogs over charcoal
  • Serve with crispy potato chips or coleslaw on the side
