Ingredients

For the Wings:

  • 2 lbs chicken wings, split into flats and drumettes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

For the Sweet Tea Glaze:

  • 2 cups brewed sweet tea (use your favorite brand or homemade, cooled)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

For Garnish (Optional):

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Equipment Needed

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet with a wire rack
  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Tongs
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Wings

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the chicken wings with olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika until evenly coated.
  3. Place a wire rack on a baking sheet and arrange the wings in a single layer, ensuring they don’t touch.
  4. Bake for 40-45 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the wings are crispy and golden brown.

Step 2: Make the Sweet Tea Glaze

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sweet tea, brown sugar, honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic, and ginger.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, and let it reduce for about 10-12 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly whisk the slurry into the glaze and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the glaze thickens. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Glaze the Wings

  1. Once the wings are done baking, transfer them to a large clean bowl.
  2. Pour the sweet tea glaze over the wings and toss to coat evenly.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Arrange the glazed wings on a serving platter.
  2. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and sesame seeds for garnish, if desired.
  3. Serve immediately with extra glaze on the side for dipping.

Tips

  • For extra crispy wings, pat them dry with paper towels before seasoning.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the glaze.
  • The glaze can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat gently before using.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pair with coleslaw, cornbread, or potato salad for a complete Southern meal.
