Ingredients

  • 1 shot (1 oz / 30 ml) freshly brewed espresso
  • 1 tbsp (15 g) dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), finely chopped or grated
  • 1/8 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste, use cayenne for extra heat)
  • 1 tsp (5 g) brown sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) hot water
  • Whipped cream (optional, for garnish)
  • Cocoa powder or chili flakes (optional, for garnish)

Equipment

  • Espresso machine or stovetop moka pot
  • Small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Espresso cup or small glass

Instructions

  1. Brew Espresso: Prepare a single shot of espresso (1 oz / 30 ml) using an espresso machine or moka pot. Set aside, keeping it warm.
  2. Melt Chocolate: In a small saucepan over low heat or in a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chopped dark chocolate and hot water. Stir until fully melted and smooth. If using a microwave, heat in 15-second intervals, stirring between each.
  3. Add Flavors: To the melted chocolate, add chili powder, brown sugar (if using), vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Whisk until fully incorporated.
  4. Combine: Pour the warm espresso into the chocolate mixture. Stir gently until well combined, ensuring a smooth, glossy texture.
  5. Serve: Pour the mixture into an espresso cup or small glass. Optionally, top with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder or chili flakes for garnish.
  6. Enjoy: Serve immediately while hot, sipping slowly to savor the spicy, chocolatey kick.

Notes

  • Adjusting Heat: Start with a small amount of chili powder and taste before adding more. Cayenne provides a sharper heat, while ancho chili powder offers a milder, smokier flavor.
  • Sweetness: The brown sugar is optional; omit for a more intense, bitter chocolate experience.
  • Serving Size: Makes one shot. Double the recipe for a larger serving or to share.
  • Storage: Best consumed fresh. Not recommended for reheating or storing.
